Influenza (flu) is caused by a virus. Unlike the common cold, it can cause serious illness and is responsible for many thousands of deaths a year in the UK.
Some people are at much higher risk of serious, sometimes life-threatening, complications if they catch influenza (flu). This includes everyone aged over 65 years. As a result, all over-65s are eligible for a free NHS flu vaccine every year. (We are private)

The symptoms are much more severe than those of a normal cold. Complications include ear infections, bronchitis and pneumonia.
There are two main types of flu vaccine for adults. One works best for people aged 18-64 years; the other is more effective for over-65s. Your Pharmacist can arrange for you to have the correct flu vaccine for you. Both types offer good protection against the strains of flu most likely to cause outbreaks for that year - they do not prevent coughs and colds.
The flu vaccine is normally given in October or November (but can be given later).
